The Alum Ale House

ALUM HOUSE HAM.
The ship lay off the alum house ham
Awaiting the wind and tide
The Brotherly Love and Amphratite
And the Betsy Cairns so stout and tight
All floated side by side

The Alum House Ham was one of the favourite landing places of the scullermen from the South bank of the river and was the site over two hundred years ago (circa 1760) of the original chemical works of Isaac Cookson - THE ALUM HOUSE - from which the place derives its name
